As optometrists we are seeing large numbers of patients suffering from “computer vision syndrome”. This syndrome is a modern day phenomenon, which occurs as a result of spending an inordinate number of hours per day in front of light emitting displays like computers, iPADs and tablets. Adults and children are equally at risk since even toddlers use these devices.
A report from the USA suggests that people spending three hours per day on a digital device may suffer from “computer vision syndrome”.
What is the risk?
The impact of too much screen time results in a 500% decrease in blink rate which causes:
Increase in contact lens intolerance
Visual discomfort
Inability to maintain clarity of focus at near point tasks
Burning scratchy itchy eyes
We frequently see these symptoms or hear these complaints at The Optical Centre. Ask your optometrist to assess you for dry eye. A diagnosis may help alleviate your visual discomfort.
How do you address this?
Be conscious of partial blinking
Take breaks whilst working on the computer
Lubricate your eyes with a non-preserved eye drop
Ways of eliminating / controlling dry eye
Ocular lubricants – using a drop during the day and a gel ointment at night prior to going to sleep
Nutritional products such as a good stable omega 3 fish oil – preferably in triglyceride from
Warm pads applied for 10mins at night
Lid cleaning lotions
Book a consultation if you think your screen time is affecting your vision.
